Why Heartland?

Heartland’s mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. Such solutions include parental choice in education, market-based approaches to environmental protection, privatization of public services, and deregulation in areas where property rights and markets do a better job than government bureaucracies.

Heartland Digital

Heartland Digital

The Heartland Institute understands the importance of digital media. In 2011, Heartland got a major facelift and set the tone for what a think tank should offer on the Web. Here are just a few examples of innovation in the digital world:

Heartland.org

Heartland’s main web presence puts everything we do within user’s immediate reach. Just one click shows the user the most recent research, news, opinion, and press coming from Heartland’s team. Clicking one of our focal issues brings the user into a world devoted to delivering everything policymakers might want to see about that topic. Travelers to heartland.org now have immediate access to everything we do.

The Heartlander

In print, Heartland produces the best monthly policy newspapers in the nation. Online, we use that content to create a consumer-facing constantly updated news organization. And if you have an iPad, you can be sure to check out Heartlander, the app that brings that news to your fingertips when you’re away from your desktop.

PolicyBot: Research Clearinghouse

PolicyBot

PolicyBot is the only free and open policy database of its kind. Here researchers can find search through tens of thousands of research, legislation, and policy documents from hundreds of sources available online.

The Heartland Institute launched its mimeograph-based “PolicyFax” over 20 years ago. Fast forward to today and visit www.policybot.org . Using state-of-the-art indexing and searching tools, PolicyBot is the only thing of its kind. Tens of thousands of research documents–constantly updated–are at your fingertips, sorted by topic, author, date, or organization.

Do you use an iPad? Check out PolicyBot on iPad for an even more robust searching experience. The iPad version gives you access to bills from over 35 states in addition to the 25,000 policy documents.

Government Relations

Giving Elected Officials Exactly What They Need

Busy elected officials need a reliable source of research and commentary on the most important public policy issues of the day. They need a resource that is independent and nonpartisan, that can respond immediately to requests for research and expert opinion, and that can tap the resources of all of the country’s leading think tanks and expert sources. The Heartland Institute delivers what elected officials need. We contact more elected officials, more often, than any other free-market organization. Heartland staff contacted elected officials more than one million times in 2010.

Heartland’s Legislative Forum connects approximately 212 dues-paying state legislators and staff members with Heartland’s network of 250 public policy experts. Forum members act as Heartland’s “eyes and ears” in state capitols, keeping us up-to-date on legislation and acting as our spokespersons in their states.

Public Relations

Effective Outreach Through Major Media

The Heartland Institute’s Communications team produces a steady stream of news alerts, opinion-editorials, and letters to the editor; organizes events for its key audiences; schedules speaking engagements for Heartland’s senior fellows; and engages in joint projects with allies and other civic and business groups.

In 2010, The Heartland Institute contacted journalists more than 262,000 times and appeared in print and on television or radio 3,490 times. Heartland hosted 21 events attracting nearly 2,000 guests, and Heartland spokespersons addressed audiences totaling nearly 20,000 at 108 events.
